It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Susan Maureen Whitley, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, who died on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at the age of 57.
Born on June 4, 1969, to the late Chester Owens and Maureen Yahnert Owens, Sue grew up in Northfield Center, Ohio, and was the eldest of three children. She attended Trinity High School and later The Ohio State University, where she earned her degree in occupational therapy. Sue devoted 20 years of her career to working with children in Cleveland Public Schools, where her compassion and dedication made a lasting difference in the lives of the children and families she served.
Sue built her life and career around helping others. She was known for her loving heart, and the people she met throughout her life quickly felt the impact of her care and kindness. She was a safe place for those in need, without question or judgment, and she had a remarkable ability to make people feel cared for, accepted, and loved.
She leaves behind her husband, Robert Whitley; siblings, Jean Ritchie (Jeff Ritchie) and Joseph Owens; children, Zachary Morit (Alyssa Morit), Aaron Morit (Jordan High), Don Lucas (Chena Lucas), and Robert “BJ” Lucas (Briyana Alexander); nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a wide circle of family and friends. Her kindness, loving heart, and unforgettable bear hugs will live on in all those who loved her.
A celebration of Sue’s life will be held at Zabor Funeral Home on September 27, 2026 at 12:00-2:00 pm. Those who wish to honor Sue may share a favorite memory or offer an act of kindness in her name.
Because of Sue’s love for the children she worked with and cared for, the family will be accepting donations in her name, in lieu of flowers, to Providence House, an organization that provides free, voluntary emergency shelter to children newborn through twelve years old whose families are experiencing crisis, without changing custody. While their children stay in the safe, loving environment of their Crisis Nurseries, Providence House embraces parents and guardians with support to help them enhance stability and prevent foster care placements.
Sue’s love and compassion touched countless lives, and her memory will continue to live on through the many people she cared for and loved.
