On Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at 8:48 a.m., Deacon Doyle Knox Jr., age 71, of Cleveland, Ohio, peacefully answered the Master’s call at the VA Hospital. Although his earthly journey has come to an end, the love he shared, the wisdom he imparted, and the legacy he leaves behind will continue to live in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
Deacon Doyle Knox Jr. was born on November 4, 1954, in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late Doyle Knox Sr. and Corene Knox. Raised in Cleveland, Doyle attended John Hay High School, where he graduated in 1973. Following graduation, he answered the call to serve his country and proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1973 to 1974. His willingness to serve was an early reflection of the dedication, strength, and commitment that would characterize his life.
Following his military service, Doyle embraced one of life’s greatest responsibilities and blessings: fatherhood. He became the proud father of four children, Doyle Knox III, Gerald Knox, Aretha Knox, and Anya Knox. His children were an important part of his life, and he took great pride in the family God had blessed him with.
In 2006, Doyle entered another beautiful chapter of his life when he met and married Oretta C. Bryson. Through their union, his family grew as he lovingly welcomed three additional children: Allan Bryson Jr., Arlisa Bryson, and Alitra Bryson. Together, they shared a life built upon love, family, faith, and cherished memories.
At an early age, Doyle accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. His faith was not merely something he professed but something he demonstrated through his service, generosity, and genuine concern for others. In his later years, he became a faithful and devoted member of Aspinwall Church of God, where he served with distinction and a heart committed to the work of the Lord.
In 2019, Doyle was ordained as a Deacon, marking a significant milestone in his spiritual journey. He held the historic distinction of becoming the first African American ordained Deacon in the Church of God Mountain Assembly. This accomplishment was not only a personal honor but also a meaningful part of the church’s history and a testament to his faithful service.
Deacon Knox understood that ministry extended far beyond a title or position. He faithfully served as the leader of the Men’s Ministry at Aspinwall Church of God, encouraging men to grow in their faith, strengthen their relationships, and fulfill their God-given responsibilities. He continued in this role until his declining health prevented him from serving in the capacity he loved.
Beyond the walls of the church, Doyle was a hardworking man who believed in the dignity of labor and the importance of helping others. For approximately 40 years, he worked as a tool and die maker, demonstrating skill, discipline, and dedication to his profession. In his later years, he also served as a chemical dependency counselor, using his knowledge, experience, and compassion to encourage and guide individuals through some of life’s most difficult seasons.
Those who knew Doyle knew that he was a man who loved people. He had a generous heart and found joy in giving to others. Whether through an act of kindness, an encouraging word, or a helping hand, he believed in making a difference wherever he could.
He was also known for his love of storytelling. Anyone who spent time with Doyle knew that a simple conversation could turn into an unforgettable story. He could talk for hours, sharing memories, experiences, laughter, and lessons learned throughout his life. Yet, behind every story was often a valuable lesson. Doyle believed in sharing wisdom, educating others, and passing along the knowledge he had gained through his many years.
To know Doyle was truly to love him. His cheerful spirit, generous nature, and unwavering love for Christ made him a blessing to his family, his church, and his community. He leaves behind more than memories; he leaves an example of what it means to serve faithfully, love deeply, and live a life that touches others.
Deacon Doyle Knox Jr. was preceded in death by his parents, Doyle Knox Sr. and Corene Knox; his brother, Jerome Knox; and his sister, LaWanda Hendrix.
He leaves to cherish his precious memory his loving and devoted wife, Oretta C. Knox; his seven children, Doyle Knox III, Gerald Knox, Aretha Knox, Anya Knox, Allan Bryson Jr., Arlisa Bryson, and Alitra Bryson; his siblings, Delta Smith, Jackie Smith (Timothy), Yolander Knox-Taylor, Phyllis Davis, and Dwayne Knox; his beloved grandchildren, Daytrease Knox, Ja’Dia Knox, Lorenzo Scott Jr., Sellers V. Johnson, Trinity Johnson, Heaven Scott, Jaelen Bryson, and Allan Bryson III; and his great-grandchild, Ja’Harii Bryson. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, his beloved Aspinwall Church family, and countless friends whose lives were enriched by his presence.
While our hearts are saddened by his departure, we find comfort in knowing that his labor was not in vain. His voice may be silent, but his wisdom will continue to speak. His seat may be empty, but his influence will remain. His earthly work may be finished, but the seeds of love, faith, and service he planted will continue to bear fruit for generations to come
