Al Lash, Streetsboro
Feb. 21, 1935 – June 10, 2023
Al Lash of Streetsboro passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at the age of 88. He was born Carl Allen Lash in Clarksville, Pa., on February 21, 1935, but he preferred to be called Al.
He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, where he met Catherine Barker, of Manistique, Mich., who also served in the Marine Corps. Al and Cathy were discharged in 1957 and married the next day in Beaufort, S.C. They settled in Streetsboro, where they raised their family of five children. Al served on the Streetsboro School Board from 1972 to 1976, and he enjoyed many weekends camping with the family, mostly in Pennsylvania. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, and he never missed an opening day of deer season in the hills of Pennsylvania for more than 60 years. He was maintenance foreman and safety director for Air Maze Corp. in Bedford when Cathy passed away in 1987.
Then he began a new chapter in his life when he met and married Barbara, to whom he was married for 32 years. He worked at Ravenna Aluminum as a safety director until his retirement in 1997. They lived in various places in Summit and Portage County, and they enjoyed for several years a log cabin home in
Ashtabula, until they settled finally back in Streetsboro. He was a member of the American Legion Post #685 in Streetsboro, where he and Barbara enjoyed gathering with friends for the regular Wednesday night dinners.
Al and Barbara loved to travel, and they visited places such as Hawaii, London, Italy, California, Alaska, many states and points of interest in the western United States, and various beaches all along the East and Gulf Coasts. They also enjoyed several annual trips to the Fort Myers area of Florida. They loved to take in nature in so many ways—walking, fishing, and sunning and relaxing on the beach. Along the way, especially in Florida, they made many friends from all over the country.
In addition to Cathy, Al is preceded in death by his parents, George Roy Lash and Helen Lucille Arnold Lash, as well as his siblings, Vivian Lash, George Lash, and Mary Lash Hull. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Lash, who resides in Streetsboro; his children Bob (Janet) Lash, Bruce (Cheryl) Lash, Norbert
(Elaine) Lash, Tammy (Rob) Whitehouse, and Kelly Carey; his grandchildren Katie, Kami, Jeremy, Rachael, Karli, Lauren, Sarah, Christina, Michael, Elise, and Kyle; and many nieces and nephews.
As a patient of the Veterans Administration health system, Al raved about each of his many doctors and caregivers. His family is grateful for their compassionate care throughout Al’s illness and passing. The family welcomes visitors for a memorial gathering on Saturday, June 17, 2023, from 12 noon to 3
p.m. at the American Legion, 10001 Aurora-Hudson Road, Streetsboro. Interment of ashes will occur at Evergreen Cemetery in Streetsboro at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Ben Curtis Family Foundation, 1675 E. Main St. Suite 260, Kent, OH 44240.
